Alderweireld Denies Move to Manchester United
Tottenham Hotspur central defender, Toby Alderweireld, has denied that he pushed for a summer transfer to Manchester United.
The 29-year-old Belgian lost his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting line-up last season amid competition from his teammate, Jan Vertonghen.
According to an English media outlet, Alderweireld was heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils during the off-season.
However, Manchester United were reportedly unwilling to pay the £70 million transfer fee demanded by Spurs’ chairman, Daniel Levy.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of Belgium’s UEFA Nations League game against Iceland, Alderweireld said: “Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham. That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team.”
He added: “I just try to help Tottenham as best I can with my qualities. Regarding my future, everything that was said in the press was not right all the time.”
