Bafana Clinch COSAFA Plate Crown

June 11, 2018

Bafana Bafana won the COSAFA Cup Plate final for the second successive season after defeating Botswana 3-0 in the final.

The match struggled for rhythm in the early stages with both sides unable to combine passes.

However, Bafana started finding their stride after 15 minutes, although their movements and possession were mostly in their own half.

Siphesihle Ndlovu should have opened the scoring for Stuart Baxter’s charges in the 18th minute after Ryan Moon was played through with a delicate header but he fired his strike wide at close range.

Lebohang Maboe nearly broke the deadlock for Bafana on the half hour mark with a strike just outside the box that took a deflection and looped on top of the roof of the net.

Minutes before the break, Motjeka Madisha got the breakthrough for Baxter’s troops with a fine glancing header following a good cross from Aubrey Modiba, 1-0.

David Bright’s troops started the second stanza on a high note and nearly found the equaliser but were thwarted by the brilliance of Bafana goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse.

Bafana then recovered after the hour mark and started dictating the match again.

The Zebras were better organised defensively with 20 minutes to go, limiting Bafana to long-range strikes.

However, they were caught on a counter-attack 12 minutes from time as Aubrey Modiba made it 2-0, scoring into a gaping net after Ndlovu broke free on the right side of the box.

Maboe made it 3-0 a minute before full-time after snatching a back pass to go through and score into the open goals.
