Canada: Teen’s Murder Charge Upgraded to Terrorism

May 20, 2020

A teenage boy in Canada has been charged with an “incel”-inspired terror attack after he was originally charged with first-degree murder.

“Incel” – which is a combination of “involuntarily celibate” – describes heterosexual males who blame women for their sexual frustrations, due to being unable to find a romantic or sexual partner.

Men who identify with or are influenced by this misogynistic ideology often congregate in online forums to discuss their bigoted views.

On 24 February, a 17-year-old boy – whose name has been withheld due to being a minor – fatally stabbed a female employee and injured her employer with a machete at the Crown Spa, an erotic massage parlour in Toronto, Ontario.

Although the suspect was originally charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder, Royal Canadian Mounted Police officials said on Tuesday, 19 May, that they found evidence of the murder being motivated by incel ideology.

As a result, the suspect’s charges have now been upgraded to terrorism. If found guilty, he could face a lengthy prison sentence. He currently remains in police custody.
