Chiefs Return To Winning Ways
Kaizer Chiefs returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership with a 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars on Sunday afternoon.
It was a slow start to the game with both teams unable to build a sustained period of pressure as they gifted possession back to their opponents with poor passing in the final third.
The first significant shot on goal came in the 14th minute, but Stars’ Ryan De Jongh sent his long-range effort inches wide of the post.
Ten minutes later Chiefs mustered their first scoring chance when a right-wing cross from
Joseph Molangoane was met by Ryan Moon, but he headed his 12-yard effort over the target.
Just after the half hour mark Leonardo Castro fashioned some space for himself 30-yards out, but he saw his stinging effort brilliantly saved by the Stars’ keeper.
Castro was in the thick of the action again in the 37th minute when a clever ball over the top from Ekstein saw the Colombian into the box, but his 16-yard volley struck the side-netting.
Neither side could break the deadlock before half time as the two teams entered the break locked at 0-0.
Four minutes into the second half, Chiefs took the lead when a right-wing cross from Molangoane was poked home by Ekstein from eight yards out, 1-0.
Just after the hour mark, Chiefs came close to doubling their lead when Willard Katsande met a corner-kick from Bernard Parker, but his header from 10 yards shaved the wrong side of the post.
In the 70th minute, a goalmouth scramble inside the Stars box following a cross from Parker saw the ball fall to Katsande eight yards out, but he flashed his shot inches over the target when he probably should have scored.
Stars threw players forward in the final 20 minutes of the game but they struggled to break down a stubborn Chiefs defence as the match ended 1-0 in favour of the Soweto giants.
