Injured Liverpool Forward Sidelined for Pre-Season
Liverpool winger, Xherdan Shaqiri, is set to miss a few pre-season games due to an injury he suffered during the UEFA Nations League clash between Switzerland and England on Sunday, 9 June.
The Swiss striker returned to the club’s Melwood training ground on Monday from international duty and was assessed thoroughly by Liverpool’s medical team.
Jurgen Klopp later released a statement confirming that Shaqiri will be sidelined for a while. He said: “Shaq is still injured from the national team and it will take a while until he is in again.”
He added: “He has a tear in his calf, so he will not be involved for a while.”
This is a huge blow for Klopp’s attacking team as the returns of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have all been delayed due to their involvement in international tournaments.
Divock Origi is currently the only senior forward available, however, teenage striker Rhian Brewster, who is set to join the first team this season, will be granted a chance in pre-season.
While there’s no definite timeline set for Shaqiri’s return, the winger is faced with the challenge of being ready for the Premier League opener against Norwich on August 9.
