Ivory Coast: DJ Arafat, 33, Dies

Ivory Coast musical artist, DJ Arafat, has tragically died following a road accident.

According to the country’s state broadcaster, RTI, the 33-year-old singer – real name Ange Didier Huon – was riding his motorcycle in Abidjan on Sunday evening, 11 August, when he collided with a car.

Despite receiving treatment for a fractured skull at a local hospital – outside which thousands of fans stood and pleaded for him to stay alive – DJ Arafat passed away on Monday morning, 12 August.

Per media reports, Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, the country’s minister of Culture, “expressed his condolences, and said a tribute would be held to honour the musician.”

Famous for his association with “coupe-decale” – a genre of music that combines rapid percussion, choppy rhythms and hip hop-style vocals – DJ Arafat gained a huge following throughout French-speaking Africa.

His biggest hits include “Kpangor”, “Zoropoto” and “Moto, Moto”.

With a staggering 11 albums under his belt, DJ Arafat was named “Best Artist of the Year” at the “Coupe-decale” Awards in 2016 and 2017.
