Rayon Frustrate Sundowns In Champions League
Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw by Rayon Sports in the first leg of their CAF Champions League first round tie in Rwanda.
The Brazilians threatened in the early stages and enjoyed a lot of the possession in the opening 15 minutes of the encounter, with Hlompho Kekana going close putting Sundowns ahead but he failed to hit the target from inside the box in the 18th minute.
The home side did manage to carve out a couple chances of their own but they were denied by Downs goalkeeper Denis Onyango.
Rayon nearly broke the deadlock just before the half-time break but their effort sailed just wide of Onyango’s upright.
With Sundowns struggling to break the hosts down, Pitso Mosimane introduced Jeremy Brockie on the hour mark for Oupa Manyisa as they pushed for an opening goal.
The game opened up with 20 minutes remaining as the Rwandan outfit rattled the upright with a shot from 18-yards out.
Themba Zwane replaced Gaston Sirino with 13 minutes remaining in the second half, with Mosimane introducing fresher legs for the closing stages.
However, neither side could break the deadlock in the latter stages of the half and were forced to settle for a stalemate.
