Will Virgil van Dijk Injury End Liverpool’s Title Race?
Liverpool centre-back, Virgil van Dijk, is set to undergo knee ligament surgery and could be sidelined for months, which has raised questions about whether Jurgen Klopp’s side will be capable of retaining the Premier League (EPL) title..
The 29-year-old Dutchman played a crucial role in Liverpool’s stellar performance last season, which saw them lifting their first EPL silverware in 30 years.
Without a solid cornerstone of the club’s success, the Reds are now faced with the worst-case scenario imaginable – retaining their EPL crown suddenly looks difficult – with Manchester City now emerging the favourites.
Ex-Liverpool star, Jamie Carragher, has shared his concerns over the defence catastrophe the club could face and believes that the team has to sign a replacement for van Dijk.
Carragher says that the Dutchman’s injury has “blown the title race wide open”.
He suggests that the player that can fill van Dijk’s shoes is RB Leipzig’s central defender, Dayot Upamecano, who has long been linked with a move to Anfield.
Everton currently sit top of the EPL log with 13 points and Liverpool just behind with ten points.
