Ex-Chiefs Player Sounds Off on Da Cruz
Retired footballer Junior Khanye is not thrilled with Kaizer Chiefs’ choice of head coach.
Back in June, Amakhosi revealed that Fernando da Cruz – a member of much-derided former coach Nasreddine Nabi’s technical staff – would be taking over as the manager of the Soweto team.
On Tuesday, 13 October, Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw by Stellenbosch FC, marking their third consecutive draw in the Betway Premiership this season.
In a recent interview with a local soccer outlet, the 41-year-old ex-Chiefs player critiqued da Cruz’s appointment and his coaching style, comparing the latter to Nabi’s.
“Fernando da Cruz was part of Nasreddine Nabi’s first technical team when he arrived at Kaizer Chiefs,” Khanye said. “On the field of play, nothing much changed for the standard of Chiefs after [sacking Nabi].”
He continued: “Then, for this season, the club decided to bring back da Cruz, and this time as the head coach. All I am trying to say here is that all these coaches believe in the same kind of way of doing things.”
In light of Chiefs’ string of draws, Khanye believes that the French tactician’s tenure won’t last long: “I don’t think he’ll survive this season. I [will] give him until January.”
