Gyokeres January Sale Raises Alarms at Arsenal
Former Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere has warned the club against selling Viktor Gyokeres in the upcoming January transfer window, cautioning that offloading the forward could leave Mikel Arteta’s side short on attacking firepower.
Despite scoring 21 goals in his debut season following a £64 million transfer from Sporting CP, the 28-year-old Swedish international has endured a frustrating campaign, starting only one English Premier League (EPL) fixture after falling behind Kai Havertz in the pecking order. However, he reminded onlookers of his quality after providing a goal and an assist in the Gunners’ 2-1 Champions League victory over Slavia Prague on Wednesday, 4 November.
With pundits such as Micah Richards advocating a winter sale, Aliadiere argued that cashing in without securing an adequate replacement would be a critical mistake, especially given Havertz’s injury history.
Nonetheless, Aliadiere questioned whether Gyokeres suits Arsenal’s current setup, noting that the striker thrives on early ball possession and direct counter-attacks rather than measured build-up play. Unless the team adapts to provide faster transitions, the talented player is expected to remain primarily a valuable rotation option rather than Arteta’s first-choice number nine.
