PSL Boss Threatens to Move Soweto Derby to Durban
The Soweto Derby could find a new home in the future.
This is according to Irvin Khoza, chairman of the Premier Soccer League, who is threatening to relocate the famed derby from FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Gauteng, to Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Reports have emerged of overcrowding and non-ticket holders bribing security officials last Saturday, 31 October, when Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1.
In a recent interview with a local media publication, Khoza compared the Soweto Derby unfavourably to the 2025 Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium between Pirates and Chiefs, which was free of such issues.
“There are certain role players who are not playing their part,” he said, “but I cannot name and shame them on television because I’ve asked for a briefing on Thursday [5 November] to make sure that if they don’t make up the act, we’re going to name and shame them because they’re letting us down.”
Khoza then brought up the idea of relocating the derby from Johannesburg to Durban.
“Maybe the future will be that instead of going to FNB Stadium, let’s go to Durban,” he remarked. “Because they are the good hosts; they do things professionally. All our events are seamless.”
Could the famed Soweto Derby find its new home in KwaZulu-Natal in the future? As always, watch this space!
