Southgate Reflects on Premier League

Sir Gareth Southgate has ruled out a return to English Premier League management, revealing his passion for football diminished towards the end of his eight-year international tenure.

During a recent interview, the 56-year-old former England manager – who stepped down following the national team’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain – stated he sees no scenario where he manages in the English top flight again.

Southgate admitted that intense scrutiny drained his enjoyment of the sport, noting that by the end of his reign, he no longer felt joy even after victories and has rarely attended matches since. His last club role was his three-year stint at Middlesbrough, which ended in 2009.

Since walking away from the touchline, Southgate has embraced media work, presented a documentary on young men’s challenges, and served as a visiting lecturer at Harvard Business School.

Southgate also weighed in on Manchester City’s ongoing financial legal battle following their guilty verdict on financial breaches, warning that the complex case offers “no winners” and could harm English football.

Content with his life outside the dugout, Southgate reflected positively on the last 18 months: “I’ve loved having different experiences. I’ve met politicians, I’ve met people in the media industry, I have learned about leadership in all sorts of areas; I’ve travelled around the world learning things. I’ve just enjoyed playing a different film in my life.”
