African Footballer Raises Eyebrows with 2 Own Goals
Hashim Musah was recently applauded for doing something considered inconceivable during a football match: scoring two own goals.
The Inter Allies defender later admitted to deliberately putting the ball in his own team’s net twice during their 0-7 loss against Ashanti Gold last Saturday, 17 July.
Talking to a radio station after the Ghana Premier League game, the 24-year-old player explained: “I heard in our hotel [room] that a bet had been made for a correct scoreline of 5-1 against my club, Inter Allies. I decided to spoil that bet because I don’t condone betting.”
His act of sabotage drew mixed messages but were largely positive, with many praising his actions, while others say he has embarrassed Ghanaian football.
Meanwhile, Nana Oduro Sarfo, a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) executive council, suggested that the young player be rewarded for his brave stance.
He said: “I must commend Hashmin Musah for that bold decision to score two own goals and he saved his club from disgrace.”
The GFA has since launched an official investigation into allegations of match-fixing; Musah is expected to provide testimony as per the concurrent police probe.
Both clubs deny the betting allegations.
