Alonso Rues First Chelsea Defeat

Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso, has reflected on the team’s first setback under his leadership.

The Blues were in English Premier League action at Emirates Stadium in London, England, on Sunday, 6 September, where they played against the hosts and current defending champions, Arsenal.

The visitors gained a 1-0 lead in the second minute, courtesy of an arrowed shot from midfielder Morgan Rogers. Twenty-three minutes later, Arsenal equalised.

Unfortunately for the Blues, they failed to capitalise on chances to regain the lead while also struggling to maintain a consistent defence. Ultimately, Arsenal’s relentless pressure allowed them to seal a 2-1 victory.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Alonso lamented the loss: “After we scored, there were 15-20 minutes where we had to defend too much and we struggled to get control … It’s the first defeat; we have to continue, but it has to hurt.”

Nevertheless, the 44-year-old Blues boss found plenty of positives to take from the game and remains fairly satisfied with his men’s performance.

“I learned about the game, about us, what we are doing and what we are starting,” he said. “The players have this attitude, this desire to compete better game-by-game, to try to create something we believe in. I know it’s going to be a long way, but so far I am happy.”
