Amakhosi’s Ntwari Under Fire for Substitution Refusal
Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari has a lot of explaining to do after refusing to be subbed out during a Carling Knockout Cup match on Sunday, 5 October.
Amakhosi went head-to-head against Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, Western Cape. Ntwari, who made his debut this season, successfully prevented their opponents from scoring any goals.
After 90 minutes of goalless action, the game went into extra time. In the final minute of added time, Chiefs tried to substitute Ntwari for Bruce Bvuma, but Ntwari declined.
Indeed, the 26-year-old Rwandan international stubbornly maintained his spot on the pitch as a penalty shoot-out ensued. Unfortunately, it was all in vain as Stellies beat the Soweto giants 5-4 on penalties.
In a post-match interview, coach Cedric Kaze commented on the situation surrounding Ntwari:
“I believe in those kinds of situations, it’s something that we’re going to handle internally, but … he felt that he was comfortable to go on for the penalties and help the team. He was coming from a good intention. Maybe the way wasn’t as good as it should be, but it’s something that we will address.”
