ANC Expels Zuma Amid Growing Party Divisions

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) after decades of membership, according to multiple reports.

Zuma, aged 82, was ousted following a disciplinary hearing that found him guilty of collaborating with the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, a move deemed prejudicial to the ANC’s integrity. The disciplinary committee cited his actions as contrary to the party’s aims, policies, and objectives
Zuma’s expulsion is a historic first for a former ANC president. His involvement with the MK Party, which secured 58 seats in the May parliamentary elections, marked a significant departure from ANC loyalty. This expulsion follows his suspension in January, reflecting deepening divisions within the party, particularly between Zuma and current President Cyril Ramaphosa.
During his presidency, Zuma faced numerous corruption allegations, which he continues to deny. His defiance of a court inquiry in 2021 led to his imprisonment for contempt, inciting the deadliest riots since the end of apartheid.
The ANC, which has ruled South Africa since 1994, saw its parliamentary majority erode in the latest elections, securing just 40% of the vote. Zuma has 21 days to appeal his expulsion. The ANC has yet to make an official statement on Zuma’s expulsion.
