Angry Arne Slot Sees Red After Referee Tirade

Liverpool boss, Arne Slot, has been handed a two-match touchline ban and a £70 000 fine for an expletive-laden outburst directed at referee Michael Oliver following his team’s fiery 2-2 draw against Everton.

Last month, Slot confronted Oliver on the pitch after Everton’s James Tarkowski scored a late equaliser, allegedly telling the referee: “If we don’t win the [English Premier League], I’ll ******* blame you.”

An independent FA panel upheld the charge, dismissing the 46-year-old Dutch coach’s claim that he instead had said, “If we don’t win the league, I will have you to thank for that.”

The commission ruled that his actions were improper, with assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff also receiving a two-match ban and a £7 000 fine.

Slot later admitted he let his emotions get the better of him, and apologised both publicly and privately, an action that helped reduce his original fine of £100 000. The incident comes amid growing concerns over the abuse of referees in football.

Liverpool, currently 13 points clear in the Premier League, are tentatively holding onto the top spot, despite several players battling injuries, including Cody Gakpo, Tyler Morton and Amara Nallo.

Slot will return to the touchline after the international break when Liverpool take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final next Sunday, 16 March.
