Argentina Faces Backlash Over Behaviour

The Argentine national football team sparked widespread international backlash following controversial actions following their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, 19 July 2026.

Tensions boiled over immediately after the final whistle when several Argentine players instigated physical altercations on the pitch. Video footage showed midfielder Leandro Paredes grabbing Spain defender Eric García by the throat before knocking substitute Gavi to the ground, while defender Nahuel Molina physically struck Spain captain Rodri. FIFA officially opened disciplinary proceedings on Monday, 20 July 2026, confirming that an ethics and disciplinary prosecutor has been appointed to investigate the post-match scuffles.

Live social media footage broadcast by midfielder Enzo Fernández showed players singing discriminatory chants targeting French players. Fernández’s Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana publicly denounced the video on Tuesday, 16 July 2024, as “uninhibited racism”, prompting Fernández to issue an official apology on Wednesday, 17 July 2024, stating: “There is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations”.
