Arya Starr Dismisses Headies Award
Nigerian singer Arya Starr, who is privately known as Sarah Aderibigbe, has scathingly dismissed being recognised as Best Female Artiste of the Year by the Headies Awards.
The awards ceremony was held at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, 3 September. Previously called the Hip Hop World Awards, the event was attended by several industry heavy-weights, including Rema and Burna Boy.
However, half-way through the elaborate evening, actress Osas Ighodaro reportedly announced that the proceedings would not continue, despite 14 categories left to be awarded, including Best Female Artist.
The remaining winners – including Aderibigbe’s category – were revealed via Instagram the following day, without a comment from the organisers as to why they had not been given the award in person.
“I will never be grateful for winning a category that wasn’t even deemed fit to be announced on stage! Best female artist na beans? [sic]” Aderibigbe tweeted on Monday, 4 September.
“We work hard, every single one of us! I’ve seen Tiwa record 4 hit songs in the same night, Tems breaths and lives for music, we didn’t deserve such nonchalance! Nigeria, you didn’t raise me to settle for less [sic],” the singer said fiercely.
