Aubameyang Stripped of Arsenal Captaincy
Arsenal forward, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has been stripped of his captaincy.
Aubameyang has not played for the Gunners since Saturday, 11 December – when the club won 3-0 over Southampton – following a disciplinary breach.
Per reports, the 32-year-old Gabon star returned later than agreed from a personal trip to France last week, forcing him to miss training in accordance with coronavirus protocols.
On Tuesday, 14 December, Arsenal released a statement, in which they revealed their decision to demote Aubameyang.
They said: “Following his latest disciplinary breach last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will no longer be our club captain, and will not be considered for selection for Wednesday’s match against West Ham United. We expect all our players, particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed.”
Coach Mikel Arteta concurred with this decision at a pre-match press conference: “It is a really clear statement from the club … We had to make the decision, it is the right one to defend the interest of the football club.”
