Bafana Legend Benni McCarthy Joins Man United

Former Bafana Bafana striker, Benni McCarthy, has joined Manchester United as one of their coaches for the first team.

The good news was announced on Saturday evening, 30 July; the next day, the 44-year-old was pitchside at Old Trafford Stadium, England for his first match with the Red Devils as they took on Rayo Vallecano. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Just before the match, the South African was able to have a quick chat with the team’s TV channel, in which he expressed his own excitement: “How can you not be good when you are standing in the Theatre of Dreams?

“I’m just excited and happy to be here, hopefully I am going to help these young players, push and change their mindsets, and really try and make a difference to United this season,” he went on to say.

This will be the former striker’s second stint as part of an English Premier League team, as he previously played for West Ham for just over a year between 2010 and 2011.

As per a statement released on Man United’s official website, McCarthy will focus on “coaching attacking plays and positioning” during his time with the club.
