Barca Mulls Over Messi Return in 2023

Barcelona are supposedly considering welcoming back Lionel Messi for the 2023/24 season.

The 34-year-old Argentine left cash-strapped Barca to join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in August last year for a two-year deal worth $41 million annually. Before his sudden departure, he had scored 672 goals with 302 assists across 778 appearances for the Spanish giants.

Now, according to recent reports, the Catalans are looking to secure Messi on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of June 2023 – provided he doesn’t exercise the option to extend his PSG stay for another year.

Camp Nou’s president, Joan Laporta, and coach Xavi Hernandez are often asked about bringing the star forward back to beef up the team’s front brawn. As such, they “would find it hard to say no” to re-signing Messi, according to an interview with an American sports news outlet last Friday, 10 June.

Other reports hint that he could return to his roots at Club Atletico Newell’s Old Boys, but joining Major League Soccer has also allegedly been seen as an option for the remainder of his career.

The final word rests with Messi, but time will tell if Barca’s prodigal son returns.
