Barker Responds to Van Rooyen Speculation
Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has commented on reports regarding the potential purchase of one of his key players.
Last week, it was reported that several top-flight South African clubs were vying for the signature of Stellies captain and right-back, Deano van Rooyen, who has received praise for his remarkable performances and form, especially in the 2023/24 season.
One such club was Orlando Pirates, who apparently put in an unspecified bid for his services.
Although Stellies was said to have offered Van Rooyen a contract extension, they were “resigned” to the likelihood of losing the 27-year-old to the Sowetan club.
However, following Stellenbosch’s 3-1 victory over TS Galaxy on Sunday, 4 August, Barker suggested in a post-match interview that Van Rooyen is staying put at the Cape Winelands outfit – for now.
“We’ve always said and maintained that we want to keep our players,” he said. “We feel that we are a team that can challenge for honours in the league, as well as in cup competitions. And that’s our intention: to work as hard as possible to retain our squad.”
Meanwhile, Van Rooyen himself has yet to comment on the rumours surrounding his future.
