Baroka FC Faces Financial Crisis
A former Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit is in the grips of a financial crisis.
According to reports, players and staff members belonging to Baroka FC – who were relegated from the PSL in 2022 – have not been paid their full salaries. This included them only being paid 50% of their salaries on 25 December 2023.
What’s more, the players and staff were promised that they would receive the other half of their salaries by the end of that particular month. However, they have yet to receive these outstanding amounts.
Due to the fact that they have not been paid, players are apparently not attending training because they cannot afford to pay for transportation, although one can assume that frustration also plays a role in this absenteeism.
These reports come nearly a week after PSL club, Moroka Swallows, were fined R1 million after players – who, after not receiving their salaries – went on strike; as a result, they failed to honour two match fixtures last December.
Baroka FC are scheduled to face off against Platinum City Rovers in a Motsepe Foundation Championship match on 14 February – however, it remains to be seen if they will be able to honour this fixture as well.
