CAF Champions League: Pirates Beat Alger 1-0
Orlando Pirates overcame MC Alger to win the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, 1 April.
Playing away at Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, Algeria, Pirates were undoubtedly in for a tough battle against their fiery hosts, who were backed by an equally fired-up crowd.
Indeed, Alger kept the Buccaneers on their toes by maintaining 69% possession of the ball for the entirety of the match, denying their visitors multiple opportunities to score.
Despite the overwhelming possession, however, the Soweto giants’ defence held firm, showcasing resilience and discipline under pressure. Their efforts paid off in the 65th minute when midfielder Mohau Nkota paced past MCA goalkeeper, Abdelatif Ramdane, to slot the ball into the back of the net.
As a result of this sole goal, Pirates walked away with a crucial 1-0 victory, extending their CAF Champions League winning streak to 11 matches.
The two teams will go head-to-head once more in the second leg of the tournament’s quarter-finals next Wednesday, 9 April, at the Bucs’ home ground of Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
