Cecilia Gentili, 52, Passes Away
Actress and transgender activist Cecilia Gentili has died at the age of 52.
In a statement posted onto her Instagram account on Tuesday, 6 February, it was announced that Gentili passed away that very morning.
“Our beloved Cecilia Gentili passed away this morning to continue watching over us in spirit,” the statement reads. “Please be gentle with each other and love one another with ferocity. We will be sharing more updates about services and what is to come in the following days.
“At this time, we’re asking for privacy, time and space to grieve,” the statement concluded without disclosing the cause of death.
Born in Galvez, Argentina in 1972, and assigned male at birth, Gentili came out as gay when she was just 12-years-old. She later identified as a transgender woman during her college years.
In the early 2000s, Gentili moved to the United States of America, where – after working as an undocumented sex worker – she became involved in transgender and LGBTQI+ activism. She also advocated for the rights of undocumented immigrants and sex workers, and championed several related organisations and charitable causes.
Fans of the drama series “Pose” will also recognise Gentili as Ms Orlando, a transgender woman of colour who dealt in illegal surgical procedures. She also made her off-Broadway debut in her successful one-woman show, “Red Ink”, in 2023.
