Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Lizwi Wokuqala’s Death Sparks Finance Debate
Although our favourite stars like to flaunt the flashy side of their lives on social media, they’re still humans at the end of the day when it comes to withholding (or sharing glimpses of) aspects of their private lives.
Still, even though their personal business is exactly that – PERSONAL – it makes folks wonder how celebs manage to land in unfortunate situations that they (or their loved ones) need help with, yet it’s the kind that us plebs have to deal with on the daily.
That brings us to Lizqwi Wokuqala, a rising musician from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal who tragically passed away in a car crash in Bloemfontein, Free State last Wednesday, 24 July. Lesotho rapper, Malome Vector, and music video director, Da Mos died, alongside him.
Although the funeral of Wokuqala – real name Lizwilenkosi Mtshali – is scheduled for Sunday, 4 August, his family lacks the funds to cover the funeral expenses. As such, they’re appealing to the public to make donations so that they can make the necessary arrangements for the service, burial and the “after tears” gathering.
The family has also appealed to the South African government to provide financial assistance during this trying time.
Naturally, the peeps of Mzansi Twitter/X are sympathetic about the “Ntombi” hitmaker’s death. However, they also raised concerns about why some celebs struggle to cover their bases where their money is needed the most:
A few tweeps also drew parallels between Wokuqala and rapper Da L.E.S, whose family is appealing for funds to cover his medical bills after he recently suffered a stroke:
@emily_teffoMe tried to explain the dynamics regarding these situations, but it still raised consternation among those who believe that celebs don’t use their money on the right things, and that the public and government don’t owe them anything:
@tnames_sa argued that in Wokuqala’s case, he was an up-and-coming artist, so he probably didn’t have the means to prepare for worst-case scenarios, let alone maintain a glamorous lifestyle:
In and amongst this debate, @leo_moloele offered some words of wisdom for plebs and celebs alike:
Indeed, while life is here to be enjoyed by all, it can be dangerous and unpredictable, and it certainly doesn’t discriminate. All one can do is be prepared as much as possible; by the same token, if folks like Lizwi Wokuqala’s family do need help, it doesn’t hurt to give a little, because a little can certainly go a long way!
