Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Tweeps React to “Nikiwe” Getting Canned

Yet another South African TV series has bitten the dust, and the latest victim happens to be “Nikiwe”, which made its debut only eight months ago!

Premiering on 23 April on ETV, “Nikiwe” tells the story of Nikiwe Radebe (who is portrayed by actress/influencer Lungelo Mpangase), the eldest child in the wealthy Radebe clan.

After a series of unfortunate events, she’s poised to take over her family’s business empire, but she faces resistance from MaSibisi, her vicious grandmother (played by Clementine Mosimane), and her secret half-brother, Ntsika (played by Akhona Ndlovu).

Hectic yet intriguing, but apparently it wasn’t enough to pop ratings:

As such, “Nikiwe” will be off our screens in early 2024. There’s no word which show, existing or upcoming, will take over its slot.

Over on Twitter/X, peeps reckoned the show had it coming, no thanks to its boring storylines and weird character development (which was probably not helped by the fact that its head writer, Siphosethu Tshapu, was replaced by Bongi Ndaba in July):

Some tweeps didn’t enjoy Mpangase’s acting skills or her character at all:

A few pointed out that the 18:30 slot seems to be cursed, due to “Skeem Saam” running at the same time on SABC1. This was also a good opportunity to bring up beloved soapie “Rhythm City”, which was canned in 2020:

Others used this an opportunity to call out ETV to cancel fashion-centred soapie “House of Zwide” next, despite its domination in the ratings:

Perhaps “Nikiwe” will get revived in the future or find a new home (Netflix, Showmax, etc). For now, enjoy the show while you can before heading back to SABC1 for some good old-fashioned “Skeem Saam”!
