Chelsea Close in on Brighton Striker Deal
Chelsea are homing in on signing Danny Welbeck, marking a notable shift in the Blues’ recent recruitment strategy.
The 35-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion striker has emerged as a key target for newly appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who is eager to inject proven English Premier League (EPL) leadership into his youthful squad.
Welbeck is coming off the most productive EPL campaign of his career, having scored 13 goals in 37 appearances last season. With only 12 months remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium, Chelsea are confident in securing his signature. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali previously acknowledged that the club needed to tweak its youth-centric recruitment model by adding experienced, top-flight professionals.
To accommodate Welbeck’s arrival, Chelsea are preparing to trim their bloated frontline. While Joao Pedro remains central to Alonso’s plans, the club is open to listening to offers for Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, and Nicolas Jackson, with Marc Guiu also expected to leave on loan or permanently.
