Chiefs: Who Will Be Their Next Coach?
Kaizer Chiefs are again seeking stability after coach Nasreddine Nabi’s exit. Nabi and Chiefs management agreed to a mutual termination on 17 September, a surprising move considering that Nabi ended the club’s 10-year trophy drought.
Cedric Kaze and Youssef Ben Khalil, who have been placed in charge following Nabi’s departure, are also expected to be shown the door after last weekend’s cup exit against Stellenbosch FC.
Let’s take a look at some of the options to replace Nabi in the long term:
1.Pitso Mosimane.
Managed Mamelodi Sundowns from 2012 to 2020, winning multiple PSL titles and the 2016 CAF Champions League. He knows how to win titles, and commands respect in the PSL. He is also currently unemployed and has spoken out about being a Chiefs fan.
2. Ernst Middendorp.
In South Africa, he’s had multiple stints: Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United, Bloemfontein Celtic, Chippa United, and others. He is known for crisis management, turning around struggling teams, and introducing youth talent. The German was in charge the last time Chiefs went close to winning the league.
3. Steve Barker
As a coach, he managed University of Pretoria (2008–2014), AmaZulu (2014–2016), and currently leads Stellenbosch FC (since 2017). He has a reputation for nurturing talent and building a team environment — traits Chiefs might want if they’re looking long term. What sets Barker apart is not only his tactical acumen but also his ability to thrive with limited resources.
Kaizer Chiefs now stand at a crossroads. After years of inconsistency and quick fixes, the club must choose between seasoned experience and new vision. Whoever steps into the role will carry immense expectations — and the rare chance to rebuild lasting stability at Naturena.
