Concerns Surround South African Zulu King’s Health
Contrasting reports have surfaced about the health status of South Africa’s Zulu King, Misuzulu kaZwelithini, as some have claimed that is being treated in hospital for suspected poisoning, while others have rubbished these rumours.
Zulu prime minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, told the public that the monarch had been hospitalised in the neighbouring country of Eswatini after falling ill on Saturday, 1 July.
According to Buthelezi’s statement, Douglas Xaba – one of the King’s close advisers – “passed on quite suddenly [on Saturday] and that there are suspicions that he was poisoned. When his majesty began to feel unwell, he suspected that he too may have been poisoned.”
Buthelezi went on to add that the 48-year-old ruler was reluctant to receive treatment in a local hospital as “his parents had both received treatment in South Africa and subsequently died.”
However, Prince Africa Zulu – a spokesman for the Royal House – released a separate statement on Sunday, 2 July, denying Buthelezi’s allegations before adding kaZwelithini is in “perfect health”.
According to the most recent update, it’s a mere routine check-up as: “His Majesty’s office decided to err on the side of caution and ensure that all possible impediments were tested, in order to mitigate against any untimely eventuality, given the reports of Mr Xaba’s sudden passing.”
