Concert Heads Face Heat Over Taylor Swift Fan Death
Taylor Swift has postponed a Brazilian gig in Rio de Janeiro following the death of a fan from soaring temperatures.
According to reports, 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides died at the “Eras Tour” concert held at the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium last Friday night, 17 November.
While no official cause of death has been given, many believe the 42-degree heat contributed to Benevides passing out – due to a suspected cardiac arrest – and remaining unresponsive, despite resuscitation efforts at the stadium for well over 30 minutes. She later died from a second cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital.
The 33-year-old pop star announced via Instagram Story the following day that the scheduled gig would be postponed, while also sharing her “grief” over Benevides’ death.
Swift also said: “The safety and wellbeing of my fans, fellow performers and crew always has to come first.”
Fans claimed across social media that Time4Fun, the show’s organisers, had prohibited water bottles from being brought into the venue.
The grieving father, Weiny Machado, told a local newspaper: “I lost my only daughter, a happy and intelligent girl … She left home to fulfil a dream and came back dead.”
