Danny Trejo Shares Joy of Being Sober for 55 Years

Danny Trejo has a lot to celebrate in his long life, but his latest reason to smile is hitting 55 years of sobriety.

The 79-year-old “Desperado” star shared the landmark personal achievement via his official Instagram account on Wednesday, 23 August.

“I’m 55 years clean and sober today by the grace of God! I’ve done this one day at a time, and for anyone out there struggling YOU CAN TOO! [sic]”, Trejo captioned a smiling selfie with his arms wide open while standing on the back porch of his Los Angeles, California home..

The beloved cult film icon has shared his history with substance abuse in previous interviews: as a teenager, he battled with addiction, which often saw him serving multiple stints of jail time. While incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, he first started going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at the age of 24.

The turning point was a realisation for Trejo in that he “had to get clean”, and is detailed in his 2021 memoir, “Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood”. The book also covers his difficult childhood filled with abuse, a young life of crime before becoming a born-again Christian, and making a name for himself as an actor.
