De la Fuente Eyeing Vacant US Coaching Job

Spain head coach, Luis de la Fuente, may have his mind set on managing the US national men’s football team.

Following La Roja’s spectacular 2-1 win over England in the UEFA 2024 European Football Championship final last Sunday, 14 July, reports have emerged that de la Fuente is eyeing the vacant managerial position for the Stars and Stripes.

Specifically, these reports state that representatives of the 63-year-old tactician contacted the United States Soccer Federation last Friday, 12 July, to inquire about the vacancy.

The position was made available after the previous coach, Gregg Berhalter, was fired for failing to get America past the group stages of the Copa América tournament.

Despite these rumours, de la Fuente recently signed a contract with the Royal Spanish Football Federation, which will see him managing Spain until 2026.

However, Spanish journalist Guillem Balague claims that the coach’s current salary is hardly enough to match what he could potentially earn in the US.

“Even though he renewed his contract, his wages are very, very low – this tends to happen at the national [team] level,” Balague reported. “I think he was a little bit unhappy … I think he just wants to reinforce his position in the federation.”
