Disappointing Night for Germany in Euro 2024 Qualifier
Germany may be having second thoughts about manager Julian Nagelsmann, who has had a disappointing start to the qualifiers for the UEFA European Championship 2024.
Austria claimed a 2-0 win over Germany last night, Tuesday 21 November, at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria. For Nagelsmann, it was simply another loss since he joined the club in September.
Midfielder Marcel Sabitzer claimed the first goal for Austria at the 29th-minute mark, assisted by his teammate, Christoph Baumgartner.
Twenty minutes later, the bad news continued for Germany when they were brought down to a 10-man squad after winger Leroy Sane received a red card for shoving defender Phillipp Mwene in response to a disputed tackle.
Austria sealed their win in the 73rd minute as Baumgartner’s quick footwork granted the team their second goal of the night.
“We need to accept the situation, but we can’t fall into the role of being victims,” Nagelsmann said determinedly during the post-match press conference.
“We are a really well-functioning group at training, but it’s not transferring onto the pitch. We’re missing some self-confidence, which is not a surprise when you see the past few months,” he added.
