Durban City Defeat Richards Bay

Durban City claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Richards Bay in the KwaZulu-Natal Derby at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday evening, 21 March, with Samkelo Maseko’s late strike proving the difference in a closely contested Betway Premiership clash.

City made two changes from their loss to Kaizer Chiefs, recalling Luphumlo Sifumba and Maseko to the starting lineup. The first half was tightly contested, with Richards Bay’s Sanele Barns firing a thunderous 35-yard effort that was beaten away by veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet, while Thulani Gumede saw a looping shot clatter the woodwork late in the half.

The second half saw City grow into the game, and their persistence paid off. Maseko broke the deadlock in the 80th minute, assisted by Saziso Magawana. He cut inside from a wide position and rifled the ball home from a tight angle. Jean Lwamba should have wrapped up the win moments later but hit the side-netting one-on-one with keeper Ian Otieno.

Durban City have now collected 35 points from 22 matches and sit fifth in the table, while Richards Bay remain 12th with 23 points, which is just five above the relegation playoff zone.
