Euro 2020: England Defeats Czech Republic 1-0
England are heading for the knockout phase of the UEFA Euro 2020 Championship after picking up a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Tuesday, 22 June.
Taking place at Wembley Stadium in London, England, the evening match was described by Three Lions coach, Gareth Southgate, before the kick-off as a great opportunity for his attacking players “to go and express themselves.”
And express themselves they did: Raheem Sterling charged in the second minute after collecting a pass from team-mate Luke Shaw, only for the ball to hit the goalpost. Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane and Harry Maguire also proved themselves to be inventive and daring on the pitch as they contended with the equally aggressive Czechs.
At the 12fth minute, Sterling redeemed himself by heading Jack Grealish’s cross into the back of the net.
In a post-match interview, Southgate commented on his side’s performance: “We worked on some things in training yesterday but credit to the players as they had to adjust … It is a huge credit to the players that they were as stable without the ball as they were.”
