Fernandinho to Leave Man City, Guardiola Responds
Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, says he “didn’t know” that skipper Fernandinho was leaving the club at the end of the season.
During a media press conference on Tuesday, 12 April, Fernandinho – who has played more than 370 games for the Citizens since joining them in 2013 – was asked by a reporter if he was planning to renew his contract for the tenth time.
“I don’t think so,” he answered, saying that he would like to return to his native Brazil with his family, and “play more regularly” for the national or local teams.
When appearing at the same conference, Guardiola was taken aback when he was told about the 36-year-old skipper’s decision to leave.
“Oh! I didn’t know it,” he responded, seemingly in disbelief. “I didn’t hear it. We will see what happens … He is so important. I’ll ask him.”
Still, the Spanish coach lavished praise upon him: “He handles many of our players and stars for the benefit of the team … an incredible player for Man City. There are things nobody knows but I know exactly.”
Despite the shock announcement, Fernandinho promised his fans later that day that he would continue to give his all for Man City – especially when they take on Atletico Madrid in Spain tonight, Wednesday 13 April, for the chance to win the UEFA Championship.
