Former Champions League Defender Anele Ngcongca Dies
Former South African international player, Anele Ngcongca, has died in a horrific car accident in KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday, 23 November 2020.
Ngcongca relocated to Durban to join his new club, AmaZulu – who had just acquired his services on a season-long loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 33-year-old defender was supposed to be unveiled at Usuthu last week, however, the unveiling was delayed due to AmaZulu’s clash against his parent club on Sunday, 22 November.
The hard-working right-back made his mark in Belgium, where he spent 9 years playing for top-flight club, KRC Genk, competing in the Champions League against Europe’s biggest names.
The 53-time capped Bafana Bafana defender made 279 appearances for Genk and won the Jupiler Pro League, two Belgian Cups and the Belgian Super Cup.
Tributes have poured in from across the globe with his former teammates, Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois – now at Manchester City and Real Madrid respectively – sending heartfelt messages on social media.
Racing Genk also took to social media to pay tribute to its legend and was also joined by a host of its rival clubs, including RSC Anderlecht, KV Oostende and KV Kortrijk, in paying tributes.
