Glitzy Durban July Faces Bad Weather, Protests
The Hollywoodbets Durban July – one of Mzansi’s most popular celebrity gatherings, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 1 July – is pushing ahead, despite bad weather and threats of protests.
While the glamorous fashion and horse-racing event takes place annually in KwaZulu Natal, this year promises to be particularly interesting as the area has just been hit by a particularly vicious storm, which some experts have labelled as a tornado.
Weather authorities have predicted clear skies for the weekend, but nature won’t be the only concern the organisers have to deal with, as a local civic group, Umsinsi Wokuzimilela, is calling for a boycott of the renowned event, pointing out that the government could put the money to better use.
Durban mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, has said that the glitzy event will take place with law enforcement on hand to protect a full house of approximately 50 000 fans who are expected to attend.
Various high-end fashion designers will be showcasing their work at the star-studded party, as they explore the “Out Of This World” theme. Local Mzansi icons like Boitumelo Thulo, Oscar Mbo, Shaun Stylist, Sarah Langa, Kefilwe Mabote and more are all expected to make an appearance as well.
