Inside Ramos’s Emotional Madrid Exit
After spending 16-years in the Spanish capital, the long-time Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, has left Santiago Bernabeu, in tears – with the desire to stay a little bit longer with the La Liga side.
The 35-year-old Spaniard broke down crying during his farewell announcement on Thursday, 17 June.
According to Ramos, the exit news came as a shock, as he didn’t know that his one-year contract extension offer had an expiration date.
He said: “I never wanted to leave. I wanted to stay here. The club made me a one-year offer with a salary reduction. I wanted two years and peace of mind for me and my family.”
Madrid’s outgoing skipper added: “During the last talks, I accepted the one-year offer, but I was informed that it was no longer possible, that it had an expiration date and that I had not heard about it.”
Despite his unexpected departure, Ramos claims that he holds no grudges against the club and its president, Florentino Perez.
