Kaizer Chiefs Snap Slump with Crucial Victory
Kaizer Chiefs reignited their Betway Premiership campaign on Sunday afternoon, 15 March, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Durban City at FNB Stadium, Johannesburg. The win provides a vital reprieve for the Amakhosi, who entered the fixture burdened by four consecutive defeats across all competitions.
The decisive moment arrived in the 69th minute through Congolese attacker Glody Lilepo. After a dominant opening period that saw Ashley du Preez and Mduduzi Shabalala go close, substitute Mfundo Vilakazi proved the catalyst, drawing defenders away before teeing up Lilepo to strike a low drive from the edge of the area.
The result marks Chiefs’ first league victory since late January and sees them leapfrog Durban City into fifth place on the table with 33 points. For the visitors, the loss ended a resilient six-game unbeaten streak. Reflecting on the pressure prior to the match, coach Nasreddine Nabi had recently emphasised the need for “mental fortitude” and clinical finishing to reward the fans’ loyalty.
Chiefs’ fans have been so angered by their losing ways lately that they have protested, calling for the sacking of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.
Despite a “nervy ending” involving goal-line clearances in stoppage time, Chiefs held firm. They now look to build momentum as they prepare to host Magesi FC on 21 March, while Durban City returns home to face Richards Bay on 22 March.
