Kanye West Changes Name to Ye
Kanye West who? Call him Ye.
The 44-year-old rapper has officially changed his name from Kanye Omari West to Ye after filing the request for “personal reasons” in August.
The request was finally approved by the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, 18 October, with the court documents stating: “There being no objections, the petition for change of name is granted. The Decree is signed and filed. The Petitioner’s name is changed from Kanye Omari West to Ye.”
The shortened version of his first name was made known in 2018, when the artist formerly known as West tweeted the announcement before his “Saturday Night Live” appearance.
He then explained its significance in a follow-up interview: “I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible, it means ‘you.’ So, I’m you, I’m us, it’s us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion, everything.”
No doubt naysayers will be disappointed in the name-change; regardless, Ye is here to stay.
