Leagues, Unions File Lawsuit Against FIFA Over Packed Schedule

The English Premier League, European leagues, and players’ unions are pursuing legal action against FIFA over its alleged “abuse of dominance” regarding the international football calendar.

The European Leagues organisation and FIFPRO Europe are filing a complaint with the European Commission, arguing that FIFA’s decisions on the match calendar and the newly introduced expanded 32-team Club World Cup create an unsustainable schedule, jeopardising player health.

The Professional Footballers’ Association has criticised FIFA for its dual role as both regulator and competition organiser, which they claim leads to conflicts of interest.

The unions argue that FIFA has consistently excluded them from decision-making processes and failed to grant a mandatory 28-day off-season break. They insist that the congested schedule has pushed the match calendar beyond sustainable limits.

FIFA, defending its position, has pointed out that the current calendar was unanimously approved by its ruling council, representing all continents. The governing body accuses European leagues of hypocrisy, claiming they prioritise commercial interests and global pre-season tours over player welfare.

FIFA asserts that its calendar is essential for the continued coexistence and prosperity of international and domestic football.
