The footballing world is in mourning following the death of legendary Liverpool forward, Ian St John.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, 2 March, via the club’s website, the former 82-year-old Scottish player passed away the day before in Arrowe Park, England, following a long and unspecified illness.
Born in 1938, St John began his footballing career in 1956 at his favourite club since boyhood, Motherwell FC. Five years later, he was transferred to Liverpool for a then-record fee of £37 500. There, he scored 118 goals in 425 appearances.
Highlights from his ten-year stint with the Reds include scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Leeds United at the 1965 FA Cup, and helping the club win two English league titles in 1964 and 1966.
The former forward also played for the Scottish national team from 1959 to 1965, where he scored nine goals in 21 appearances. After retiring in 1973, he pursued coaching and television punditry.
