Liverpool Victorious Against Ajax
Liverpool earned their first UEFA Champions League win this season last night, Tuesday 13 September, when they defeated Ajax 2-1.
The match – held at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England – was a welcome turn around after Liverpool were beaten 4-0 by Napoli last week.
“The way we played, the way we defended, everything was different. Much higher intensity, much more aggression, braver, more ready, everything was better,” said Reds’ head coach, Jürgen Klopp, in the press conference after last night’s match.
After opening with a moment of silence for the recent passing of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, the Reds quickly established their dominance as striker Mohamed Salah earned the first goal 17 minutes into the match.
Ten minutes later, midfielder Mohammed Kudus equalised the game by scoring a goal for Ajax, assisted by a kick pass from forward Steven Berghuis.
Tensions grew during the remainder of the match, as it looked like Ajax would take the lead several times. Fortunately, defender Joel Matip’s late header at 89 minutes – with an assist from team-mate, Konstantinos Tsimikas – sealed the deal for Liverpool.
However, Klopp knows that the club will need to continue their training to keep up the results:. “It’s the first step, nothing else, not more.”
