Louisa Zondo Climbs Mount Everest for Riky Rick
A month after Riky Rick’s unexpected death, his mother has broken her silence in the most incredible way possible.
The 34-year-old rapper – real name Rikhado Makhado – passed away on 23 February. The cause of death was not confirmed, although he reportedly took his own life following a long battle with depression.
Last Wednesday, 23 March, Rick’s mother Louisa Zondo – who has since been mourning in private – posted photos from her trek to Mount Everest in the Himalayan mountain range.
Addressing her late son in the caption, Zondo wrote, “I am lying on my back in a warm bed in the Buddha Lounge, Phakding, Nepal. I’m in Nepal because I am on my way to Mount Everest Base Camp, MaRiky … Since your death last month, I’ve been starkly aware of the need in me to make sense of where I am and how I am called to be.”
Dedicating her once-in-a-lifetime experience to Rick, Zondo continued: “You were the first person to really teach me to sit with challenges and ‘encounter them’ without rushing to offer what I perceived to be solutions.
“For this reason, my Mount Everest Base Camp walk will be embodied in a long conversation with you. I imagine that the conversation will not be neat and orderly, and yet all else is unclear to me, and the conversation might just present itself as and when it emerges.”
Certainly a beautiful sentiment from a mother to her beloved son.
