Mamelodi Sundowns Win AFL Final 2-0
Premier Soccer League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, are now the inaugural winners of the African Football League (AFL) after defeating Wydad AC 2-0 on Sunday, 12 November.
In front of a capacity crowd at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Gauteng, the Brazilians faced off against the Moroccan outfit. For a large portion of the game, the hosts maintained a strong possession (69%) of the ball, although their opponents were wily enough to keep them on their toes in the first half.
Fortunately for Sundowns, extra time was added onto the first half, thus allowing striker Peter Shalulile to bump up the score to 1-0 in their favour.
Come the second half, teammate Aubrey Modiba doubled the lead in the 53rd minute after intercepting a pass from Wydad and punting the ball into the bottom-left corner of the net.
At the final whistle, Sundowns not only bagged themselves a 2-0 victory, but they were also crowned as the first-ever champions of the AFL.
With two current championship reigns to their name, could Mamelodi Sundowns add a third when the CAF Champions League starts on 25 November? As always, watch this space!
