Mamelodi Sundowns Win PSL Title
For the 13th time in their history, Mamelodi Sundowns FC have been crowned the DStv Premiership champions!
Despite Chippa United’s 1-1 draw with SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-1 win over Stellenbosch FC (both on Saturday, 1 April), Sundowns’ 59-point lead on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) rankings could not be overtaken.
As a result, the Brazilians – who have been serving top-notch performances throughout the 2022/2023 season – have won their sixth consecutive championship.
In a post-match press conference on Saturday following their 2-1 victory over Coton Sport, coach Rulani Mokwena was full of praise for his team, while also commenting that although they made it look easy, they truly fought hard to attain the PSL title.
“The league title is the hardest to win in any country,” said Mokwena. “You’ve got to play against 15 opponents home and away and the competition lasts eight or nine months. There’s no other competition any team competes in that lasts as long.
“Sometimes maybe because of the way it may be perceived, and people start to think it looks easy, that’s actually the most difficult.”
Congrats to Mamelodi Sundowns on their wonderful feat!
