Man Arrested Over SA Parliament Fire
A man has been arrested in connection with a fire that broke out at the House of Parliament in Cape Town, South Africa.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, 2 January, the blaze began in the third floor offices before spreading rapidly to the wing housing, where the National Assembly chamber is located. Per officials’ reports, the roof of the assembly hall was “completely gone.”
Approximately 70 firefighters were called to the scene, and have been working for hours to extinguish the fire. No injuries have been reported thus far.
Speaking to media outlets, police spokeswoman Thandi Mbambo said that a man between the ages 49-51 has been arrested on charges of arson, housebreaking and theft.
She said: “He’s still being interrogated. We have opened a criminal case. He has been arrested and will appear in court on Tuesday.”
